Variables in Statistics

Scale Types for Categorical Variables

The scales for categorical variables are:

1.Nominal Scale – It just puts value in categories. No ordering can be made.

E.g. Do you watch movies: Yes, No?

2. Ordinal Scale- Ordering in categories can be done.

E.g. Which position did you get in the class: First, Second, Third?

Scale Types for Numerical Variables

The numerical variables can be expressed in Interval or Ratio scales.

Interval scale expresses the values which are relative. It does not have absolute zero point.

E.g. Outside temperature is 20 deg C.

Ratio scale is used for absolute values. These values have zero reference point. E.g. Price of the book is $150.
