Variables in Statistics

The variables in statistics are of two major types:

1. Categorical or Qualitative Variables – The values can be put in categories such as first prize, second prize, third prize.

2. Numerical Variables or Quantitative Variables– The values represent quantities such as 20 degree centigrade, 10 mm Hg, 1000 miles, 6 hours etc.

Numerical variables can be of two types:

A) Discrete Variables– These variables store numerical values which generate from counting process such as 0, 1, 2, 3, ….., 100,  ….., 100000 etc. Basically these values are subset of Whole Numbers.

B) Continuous Variables– These variables store numerical values which generate from measuring process such as 1 kg, 1.5 kg, 1.75kg etc. In mathematical terms these are subset of Real numbers.
