The variables in statistics are of two major types:

1.** Categorical or Qualitative Variables** – The values can be put in categories such as first prize, second prize, third prize.

2. **Numerical Variables or Quantitative Variables**– The values represent quantities such as 20 degree centigrade, 10 mm Hg, 1000 miles, 6 hours etc.

Numerical variables can be of two types:

A) **Discrete Variables**– These variables store numerical values which generate from counting process such as 0, 1, 2, 3, ….., 100, ….., 100000 etc. Basically these values are subset of Whole Numbers.

B) **Continuous Variables**– These variables store numerical values which generate from measuring process such as 1 kg, 1.5 kg, 1.75kg etc. In mathematical terms these are subset of Real numbers.
